I've been fascinated by the reign the Henry VIII for a long time, but I haven't watched The Tudors, save for an odd episode here and there, until quite recently. While it began as entertaining background noise (something has to make grad school homework tolerable aaagh), I was somehow sold on the show beginning around the second season. ...To the point that I watched every episode to date within a week's time. Uhhh oops?

Because it's a sudden and new fandomy obsession, I thought it would be appropriate for [info]picspammy's current challenge. :D At first I was going to post srs business scene to screencap, but in the end I chose a brief scene with Cromwell, Cranmer, and Cranmer's wife. It's actually one of my favorites, because it's a rare moment when the characters aren't on edge thanks to politics.

And James Frain's facial expressions amuse me.

I am sorry about that

(No, seriously, that is the title of the article)

Back in February, Eric Holder – the country's first black Attorney General – announced that we were a nation of cowards because, "we, as average Americans, simply do not talk enough to each other about race." Holder is right.

That there are still organizations operating in this country that demonize, target, and victimize innocent people simply because of the color of their skin is unconscionable. That there are still hate groups in our midst whose very foundation is rooted in a malevolent contempt for minorities is disgusting. That, while we stand quietly, there are those working daily inside this country to commit genocide against blacks is an abomination. And worse, still others go beyond complicit silence and actually attempt to give legitimacy and offer defense for such institutions perpetrating these atrocities.

These devastating realities only prove Holder's assertion to be accurate. It is inescapable...as long as Planned Parenthood continues to operate in this country, we are a nation of cowards.

I know a woman
who keeps buying puzzles
chinese
puzzles
blocks
wires
pieces that finally fit
into some order.
she works it out
mathematically
she solves all her
puzzles
lives down by the sea
puts sugar out for the ants
and believes
ultimately
in a better world.
her hair is white
she seldom combs it
her teeth are snaggled
and she wears loose shapeless
coveralls over a body most
women would wish they had.
for many years she irritated me
with what I consider her
eccentricities -
like soaking eggshells in water
(to feed the plants so that
they'd get calcium).
but finally when I think of her
life
and compare it to other lives
more dazzling, original
and beautiful
I realize that she has hurt fewer
people than anybody I know
(and by hurt I simply mean hurt).
she has had some terrible times,
times when maybe I should have
helped her more
for she is the mother of my only
child
and we were once great lovers,
but she has come through
like I said
she has hurt fewer people than
anybody I know,
and if you look at it like that,
well,
she has created a better world.
she has won.

Frances, this poem is for
you.

Guess I'm just a good man. *stabs* Well, I'm okay.

Watching V made me pull out my Firefly DVDS. Inara is so precious, I think Morenna Baccarin is gorgeous. A highlight of my week was when one of my friends confused this icon for me once, haha. Anywayyy V was fabulous. A little predictable, but the cast is fantastic and I think it's going to be a good show.

Spoilery thoughts on V )

On Mal/Inara (because I'm watching Shindig). Wow, they really care for each other, don't they? But I can't see a relationship of theirs being very happy without someone compromising a whole lot. And that someone would be Inara, most likely. But it's the Jossverse and the most functional couple on any of his shows is Zoe/Wash, and that doesn't end so happily.

Can anyone rec me good Mal/Inara fic?

"Look about you, Clarke. You see the mountain, and hill following after hill, as wave on wave, you see the woods and orchard, the fields of ripe corn, and the meadows reaching to the reed-beds by the river. You see me standing here beside you, and hear my voice; but I tell you that all these things-- yes, from that star that has just shone out in the sky to the solid ground beneath our feet--I say that all these are but dreams and shadows; the shadows that hide the real world from our eyes. There is a real world, but it is beyond this glamour and this vision, beyond these 'chases in Arras, dreams in a career,' beyond them all as beyond a veil. I do not know whether any human being has ever lifted that veil; but I do know, Clarke, that you and I shall see it lifted this very night from before another's eyes. You may think this all strange nonsense; it may be strange, but it is true, and the ancients knew what lifting the veil means. They called it seeing the god Pan." "

In Turkey, fertile ground for creationism
U.S. critics of evolution help translate their ideas for a society already torn between Islam and secularism

Sema Ergezen teaches biology to Turkish students interested in teaching science themselves, and she has long struggled with her students' ignorance of, and sometimes hostility to, the notion of evolution.

But she was taken aback when several of her Marmara University students recently accused her of being an atheist, or worse, for teaching anything but the doctrine that God created the Earth and everything on it.

"They said I was a liar if I called myself a Muslim because I also accepted evolution,"
she said.

What especially disturbed -- and amused -- the veteran professor was that the arguments for creationism presented by some of the students came directly from the country where she was educated in the biological sciences years before -- the United States. Translated and adapted for a Muslim society, the purported proofs that Darwinism and evolution were wrong came directly from American proponents of Christian creationism and its less overtly religious offshoot, intelligent design.

Joseph Cao: Health Care's LONE Republican Supporter Is Rep. Anh "Joseph" Cao

One Republican lawmaker out of 177 crossed party lines to support the health care reform legislation offered by Democrats.

Rep. Anh "Joseph" Cao, the Louisiana Republican who hails from a decidedly Democratic New Orleans district, voted yea on the final passage of legislation. He joined 219 Democrats to make the final margin 220 to 215 in favor of reform's passage.

Cao was a major (and possibly the lone) target for Democrats hoping to get even a semblance of bipartisan support for the bill. He said after the vote that he had obtained a "commitment from President Obama that he and I will work together to address the critical health care issues of Louisiana."

In the past, Cao has been touted by House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) as "the future" of the GOP.
Republicans clearly went the distance to keep him in the fold for the health care vote. House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.), who promised protesters at a Tea Party rally this week that "not one Republican will vote for this bill," was standing beside Cao as the historic vote unfolded.

I guess we are who we are for a lot of reasons. And maybe we'll never know most of them. But even if we don't have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there. We can still do things. And we can try to feel okay about them.
I think that if I ever have kids, and they are upset, I won't tell then that people are starving in China or anything like that because it wouldn't change the fact that they were upset. And even if somebody else has it much worse, that doesn't really change the fact that you have what you have.
